This article provides biological background of the plant, technical information, active ingredients of Kaempferia parviflora Wall. Ex Baker (Thai name; Krachai-dam). Black ginger is a Thai indigenous herbal plant with a long history of domestic consumption. It is used as an energiser, an antioxidant, an aphrodisiac, an anti-diuretic and a vasodilator. The herb can be applied in the treatment of stomach pain and bloating, irregular menstrual cycle, disease of the mouth tissue, high blood pressure, stomach ulcer, diarrhea, headache, muscle ache and pain, and dizziness. When taken once a day, the extracts improve dental heath, skin elasticity and hair quality. It is also used to cure allergic symptoms and to treat gastrointestinal disorder.
